For this article, I’m keeping the bedroom category general. This should give you a general guide on what to expect for your furnishing budget for each bedroom. You’ll see that I’ve broken down the budget to include essential furniture and decorative items.
As a designer, I think the bed is the most important piece to purchase and start with as it’s typically the focal point. In addition to purchasing a good quality mattress. Dressers and nightstands are also must-have essentials to optimize storage in each bedroom. Additionally, If you want to create an aesthetic space I would stay away from complete bedroom sets as they tend to look dated.
For the budget, I used a queen-sized but depending on the size of your room you might need a king, full, or twin.
Decorative Items include things such as duvets, sheets, throw pillows, and more. Again these items can greatly impact your space, making it feel thought out and designed.

Home Office
If you work from home then creating a comfortable home office is crucial. If you don’t have a designated home office an additional bedroom is a great place to put one. As an interior decorator, I would focus on creating the right balance of a well-organized space that is also stylish. If you work from home you’re going to be in your office all day you’re going to want it to be comfortable while also looking good and professional.
For essential furniture items, I’ve included home furnishings such as a desk, desk chair, and bookcases. The furniture budget on the desk will vary depending on if you need a standing desk or one with storage. Further, I would highly suggest investing in a good quality desk chair that will keep you comfortable all day.
Again if you have a limited budget you might want to consider budget-friendly retailers, online marketplaces, and facebook marketplace for decorative items.

Most homes will have an outdoor space that will need to be furnished as well. This could be a patio, porch, or deck. For these spaces, you’ll need weather-resistant furniture that’ll hold up under the elements. Depending on square footage you might need a cozy seating area and/or a dining area.
Again I’ve separated the essential furniture and the decorative items. I find that it’s best to start with your main furniture items and then add the decorative accessories over time.

Office (I’m using one of the 4 bedrooms as an office): $6,500
Outdoor Space: $9,100
Grand Total: $66,300
Again all the furniture and decor items for this cost breakdown are in the moderate furniture category. This category includes big box brands such as Crate & Barrel, CB2, Anthropologie, & Pottery Barn.
If you need to get the price down without sacrificing quality, purchase your main furniture items from moderately priced retailers then purchase your rugs, decor, art, etc from budget-friendly retailers.
